Kadavu
Great Astrolabe Reef Diving, Kadavu
A long barrier reef around one of Fiji's quietest islands, with passages, walls, hard corals and manta cleaning stations.
The island
Great Astrolabe Reef diving in brief
Kadavu is a large, mountainous island south of Viti Levu, and the Great Astrolabe Reef wraps around its eastern and northern sides. The reef is a true barrier reef: a long outer wall facing the open ocean, cut by passages where water floods in and out of the lagoon with the tide. It takes its name from the French ship Astrolabe, which nearly ran aground on it during a voyage of exploration in the 1820s.
Great Astrolabe Reef diving is quieter than in Fiji's better-known regions. Kadavu has no big resorts and no road network to speak of, and the dive operators work from small eco-lodges scattered around the coast. Many divers come here for exactly that reason: you can spend a week on the reef and rarely see another boat.

The dives
Types of dive on the Great Astrolabe Reef
Passages
Tidal channels through the reef where fish and sharks gather in the current.
Outer walls
Steep walls on the ocean side with sea fans, soft corals and blue water.
Manta stations
Cleaning stations where manta rays come in to be cleaned by small fish.
Lagoon reefs
Hard coral gardens and bommies in calmer water, good for training.
Manta rays at Kadavu
The best-known dives at Kadavu are at manta cleaning stations, where reef manta rays slow down over a coral head and let cleaner wrasse pick parasites from their skin. Divers settle a respectful distance away, stay low and still, and wait. On a good day the mantas circle the station again and again. Sightings depend on season and conditions and are never guaranteed, so ask your operator how often mantas have been seen recently. Manta rays are protected in Fiji, and the same code of conduct applies here as in the Yasawas: keep your distance, never touch, and do not block the manta's path. Read more on our Yasawa Islands diving page.
Conditions and the trade winds
Kadavu's weather side faces the south-east trade winds, which blow most steadily in the cooler months from about May to October. On windy days the outer reef can be rough and operators move to sheltered sites inside the lagoon or on the lee side of the island. The warmer months often bring calmer seas but more rain and the chance of cyclones. Neither season is clearly better. It is worth allowing a few extra days so that one windy spell does not cost you the outer reef. See best time to dive Fiji for more detail.
Current in the passages can be strong, especially around spring tides. The lagoon dives are suitable for new divers, and many lodges teach courses there. Advanced divers will want to spend time on the passages and outer walls.
Getting to Kadavu
Kadavu has a small airstrip at Vunisea with domestic flights from Viti Levu, and there are also inter-island ferries. Lodges collect guests from the airstrip or the wharf by boat, because most of them can only be reached from the water. Flights are small and luggage limits can be strict, so check the allowance before you pack heavy dive gear. Our Fiji dive trip planning page covers domestic flights and gear in more detail.
Who Kadavu suits
Kadavu suits divers who value quiet reefs and a simple, nature-focused stay over nightlife and big-resort facilities. It is a good choice for couples and small groups, for photographers who want time on manta stations, and for divers who want to combine diving with kayaking, birdwatching and village visits. If you want the full range of Fiji's regions, compare Kadavu on the best dive sites in Fiji page, and see the Fiji marine life guide for the animals you can expect.
