Best Time to Dive Fiji
Fiji is a year-round dive destination. Here is how the seasons change the weather, the water and what you are likely to see.
The short answer
When is the best time to dive Fiji?
The best time to dive Fiji depends on what you want from the trip. For the most settled weather and the manta season in the Yasawa Islands, the cooler, drier months from about May to October are the usual choice. For the warmest water, the months from about November to April are better, but they are also the wet season and the official cyclone season in the South Pacific.
The good news is that there is no closed season. Dive operators run all year, the water is always warm, and most sites can be dived in any month. What changes is the weather on the surface, the wind, the rain, and the animals that visit.

Two seasons
Dry season and wet season compared
Cooler, drier: about May to October
Less rain and lower humidity, steady south-east trade winds, cooler water in the mid-20s Celsius, often good visibility. Manta season in the Yasawas.
Warmer, wetter: about November to April
Warmest water of the year, often around 28 to 30 degrees, calmer seas on many days, heavy showers, high humidity and the risk of tropical cyclones.
Shoulder months
April, May, October and November can bring a bit of both: warm water, fewer visitors and changeable weather.

| Months | Season | Water | Weather | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January to March | Wet, warm | Warmest, about 28 to 30 °C | Hot, humid, heavy showers; peak cyclone risk | Book flexible travel and good insurance |
| April | Shoulder | Warm | Rain easing, cyclone season ending | Quieter resorts |
| May and June | Dry, cooler | Cooling, mid-20s °C | Drier, trade winds pick up | Manta season starts in the Yasawas |
| July to September | Dry, coolest | Coolest, about 24 to 26 °C | Driest months, steady trade winds | Busy season; book early. Thicker wetsuit helps |
| October | Dry, warming | Warming | Settled weather, winds easing | End of the main manta season |
| November and December | Wet, warm | Warm, near 28 °C | Humid, showers, cyclone season begins | Christmas holidays are busy |
Water temperature and what to wear
Fiji's water is warm all year, but there is a noticeable difference between the seasons. In the coolest months, around July and August, the water drops to the mid-20s Celsius, and divers doing three or four dives a day on a liveaboard often feel the cold by the end of the week. In the warmest months the water can reach around 29 or 30 degrees. A 3 mm full wetsuit is the usual choice for most of the year, with a 5 mm or a hood for the cooler months if you feel the cold. A full suit also protects against stinging hydroids and coral in current.
Visibility
Visibility in Fiji is often excellent, but it varies with the tide, the site and the plankton in the water. Paradoxically, the plankton that reduces visibility is also what feeds the soft corals and the manta rays. Sites near river mouths on the big islands can be murkier after heavy rain, which makes the wet season less predictable around Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Outer reefs and offshore pinnacles are usually clearer.
Cyclone season
The South Pacific cyclone season runs from about November to April. Most weeks in that period pass without a cyclone, and many divers enjoy the calm seas and warm water. But when a storm does come, it can close dive operations and flights for several days. If you travel in these months, buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption, keep your plans flexible, and check forecasts before you fly. We cover this in more depth on the Fiji dive trip planning page.
Timing by region
- Yasawa Islands: go between about May and October for the manta season. See Yasawa Islands diving.
- Rainbow Reef: good all year; plan around the tides and moon more than the season. See Rainbow Reef, Taveuni.
- Kadavu: trade winds in the cooler months can rough up the outer reef, so allow spare days.
- Liveaboards: run all year, with routes adjusted to the wind. See Fiji liveaboard diving.
